A coalition of concerned democratic stakeholders has called on Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, to uphold press freedom and respect the constitutional rights of journalists amid allegations of arrests and intimidation in the state.

In a press statement signed by Deputy National Convener and North West Coordinator of the One North Movement, Sani Ahmad, popularly known as Zangina, the group expressed concern over what it described as a “disturbing trend” of harassment of media practitioners under the current administration, urging the governor to adhere strictly to the rule of law.

“We wish to unequivocally call on His Excellency to respect the rule of law and uphold the constitutional rights of citizens, particularly the fundamental right to freedom of expression and press,” the statement read.

The group noted that democracy thrives on open dialogue, dissenting opinions, and constructive criticism, warning that any attempt to suppress such freedoms could weaken democratic institutions.

It further drew a comparison with the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which it said has demonstrated tolerance towards critics and opposition voices.

“The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently projected tolerance, inclusiveness, and respect for democratic values, where even critics and opponents are protected under the law,” the group stated.

According to the stakeholders, actions perceived as suppressing press freedom at the state level risk undermining not only democratic principles but also the broader image of governance in the country.

The statement also recalled that past leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, were subjected to public scrutiny, stressing that criticism remains a vital component of democracy.

“Resorting to arrests and intimidation only deepens public distrust and weakens democratic institutions,” the group added.

The coalition referenced concerns raised by the International Press Institute Nigeria regarding the state of press freedom, warning that continued violations could attract national and international attention.

It therefore urged Governor Bago to immediately halt any actions that infringe on press freedom, ensure that law enforcement agencies operate within the confines of due process, and promote an atmosphere of tolerance and engagement.

“Leadership is a responsibility to serve and protect all citizens—not to silence them. Upholding the rule of law will strengthen public confidence and reinforce the democratic credentials of Niger State,” the statement added.
