The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice has congratulated Taiwo Oyedeleq on his elevation as Substantive Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, describing the appointment as a reward for excellence and reform-driven leadership.
In a statement issued by the National Coordinator of the coalition, Comrade Jamesa Okoronkwo, the group said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to place Oyedele at the centre of Nigeria’s economic management reflects a commitment to merit-based governance and the objectives of the Renewed Hope agenda.
The coalition described the appointment as a “masterstroke of governance,” adding that it reinforces confidence in technocratic leadership within the federal economic team.
Oyedele, who previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, was credited by the group with reshaping Nigeria’s tax administration framework through far-reaching policy recommendations.
According to the coalition, his reforms contributed to the exemption of a large proportion of low-income earners and small businesses from tax burdens, as well as efforts to simplify Nigeria’s fragmented tax structure by reducing multiple levies into a more harmonised system.
The statement also noted that his policy direction aimed at improving Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio through efficiency, digitalisation, and improved compliance rather than increased tax rates.
The group described Oyedele as “an economic stabiliser,” stating that his transition from the private sector into public service has introduced greater efficiency into fiscal governance.
It urged stakeholders, including the private sector and development partners, to support the implementation of the 2026–2030 National Development Plan under his leadership.
However, the coalition warned against what it described as attempts by unnamed individuals to undermine the minister’s reform agenda, alleging resistance from those uncomfortable with ongoing fiscal transparency measures and the reduction of arbitrary waivers.
It called on critics to desist from distractions, insisting that the reform process must be allowed to continue in the national interest.
Commending President Tinubu for the appointment, the coalition expressed confidence that Oyedele’s tenure would strengthen economic stability and deepen ongoing fiscal reforms in the country.
