Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel Asagba has cautioned newly admitted students against being "captives of the social media," which he described as a "subtle distraction and time stealer.”

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony of 9,498 students admitted for the 2025/2026 academic session, the VC urged them to shun social vices, examination malpractice, indecent dressing and focus on academic excellence.

“As first year students, you must strive to deliberately protect your esteemed ‘gown’ from the vagaries and hostilities of the town,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor disclosed that The Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 ranking placed DELSU as the 4th best state university in Nigeria, 12th overall best university in the country, and the best state university in the South-South and South-East geo-political zones.

He attributed the achievement to sustained academic stability and government support, noting that the university has maintained a smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar over the years.

The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Delta State Governor and Visitor to the University, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for the administration’s support.

Highlight of the ceremony was the administration of the matriculation oath by the Registrar, Mrs. Rufina Ufiofio.
