Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has spoken about her challenging transition from R&B to Afrobeats after relocating to Nigeria in 2012.
Savage, who began her career abroad as a backup vocalist for Mary J. Blige, returned home inspired by the Nigerian music industry’s growth and signed with Mavin Records.
In a recent interview on Arise TV, the ‘Kele Kele Love’ singer said the switch from R&B to street sounds was difficult at first.

She credited former label boss Don Jazzy with reshaping her approach.
“It was difficult for me to transition from R&B to street sounds. But when I was at Mavin Records, Don Jazzy opened my mind to so many different things. He made me believe that talent was not limited, that I could do anything if I really focused on it.
“He took me out of that R&B bubble and introduced me to other sounds,” she explained.
Savage said she has no regrets about returning to Nigeria and switching to Afrobeats.
