• Owie seeks national intervention over crisis

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has accused elements within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of taking their internal crisis too far, following Tuesday’s attack on party leaders in Benin City.

In a personally signed statement, Okpebholo condemned the violence, suggesting it stemmed from internal disagreements within the party. He warned against the importation of thugs under the guise of politics and vowed not to allow the state to become a theatre of conflict.

“Even though the precise motive behind this attack may not yet be known, I strongly believe that the ultimate objective is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. This is what we are known for, and we will remain committed to that path.

“As a leading political force in the state, we welcome healthy opposition and will not be intimidated by blackmail or self-inflicted attacks. No amount of political manipulation will sway Edo people from supporting a government they trust.

“All parties must resolve their internal disputes before organising events in the state, as any attempt to foment crisis under the guise of politics will not be tolerated,” the governor said.

The ADC described the incident as a gun attack and assassination attempt targeting its leaders, including former Edo governor John Odigie-Oyegun, ex-Anambra governor Peter Obi and former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged a pattern of political intimidation against its members and rejected claims linking it to unrest in the state. It criticised what it called inflammatory remarks allegedly made by the governor and warned that elected officials have no constitutional authority to threaten opposition figures. The party said it was documenting incidents and would pursue lawful avenues, including international mechanisms, to seek redress.

Reacting, a member of the House of Representatives from Anambra State, Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe, warned that no harm must befall Obi, describing the attack as an assault on democracy. He called for an immediate, transparent and independent investigation, urging security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Similarly, youths from Agulu in Anambra State condemned the alleged assassination attempt and urged the Edo State Government to launch a full-scale probe to unmask the perpetrators. They also called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen protection of lives and property.

The crisis within the Edo ADC deepened as former Senate Chief Whip, Rowland Owie, asked the party’s national leadership to intervene in the state chapter’s affairs. Owie accused Oyegun of sidelining statutory members and convening meetings without due process.

Tensions reportedly escalated during a disputed meeting at Oyegun’s Benin residence, where some party stakeholders were allegedly denied entry. The situation later degenerated, with hoodlums said to have attacked the residence and the party secretariat. Owie denied any involvement, insisting he had never engaged in violent politics.

Barrister Kenneth Imasuangbon and the Conference of Registered Political Parties also condemned the violence, warning against political intolerance as 2027 approaches.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed it has commenced investigation into the attacks on the ADC secretariat and Oyegun’s residence. Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said no arrests had been made but assured that updates would be provided as investigations progress.
