Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has condemned the killing of the young man, Mena Otidi, by a police officer, describing the act as “barbaric, unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life.”

In a statement, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, said his boss expressed sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family. “No citizen deserves to be subjected to such brutality and death,” Oborevwori said, stressing that the protection of lives remains paramount under his administration.

The governor commended the Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan  for what he described as swift disciplinary action, including the dismissal and planned prosecution of officers implicated in the killing. He added that “justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done,” assuring that the state government would follow the case through to its conclusion.

The incident, which reportedly involved Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman in Effurun, has triggered outrage across Delta and beyond, with calls for accountability and police reform intensifying.

Also, Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, appealed for calm following a high-level meeting with police authorities in Warri.

“The public are angry, and we understand that… but the police are handling the matter,” he said.

Dafinone noted that the IG Disu had demonstrated commitment by deploying senior officers to oversee the case.

“That shows the seriousness with which the Nigerian Police are treating this matter,” he added.

While describing the killing as “shocking and tragic,” the senator cautioned against generalising the actions of one officer to the entire force.

“This is not the police as a whole. It appears to be the conduct of one man acting outside acceptable standards,” he said.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, Salman-Dogo Garba, who was deployed on the directive of the IG, assured the victim’s family and the public that justice would be served.

“I want to assure everybody that this matter will not be swept under the carpet,” he said.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations continue.
