The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has redeemed his pledge to reward outstanding coaches following Team Edo’s historic triumph at the 2nd Niger Delta Games tagged ‘Edo 2026’.

At a special meeting with 17 coaches who led the state’s campaign, Enabulele presented a surprise financial package worth millions of naira in appreciation of their dedication and technical excellence.

Team Edo topped the medal table with an impressive 52 gold, 34 silver, and 25 bronze medals a total of 111 medals finishing ahead of traditional powerhouses Delta State and defending champions Bayelsa State.

The week-long competition, which ended on February 26, 2026, at the iconic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, featured over 3,000 athletes from nine states competing in 17 sports.

The victory marked Edo’s first major multi-sport tournament title since the 2002 National Sports Festival, ending a 24-year drought.

Enabulele commended the coaches for their discipline, unity, and strategic planning, singling out weightlifting head coach Ikponmwosa Omoroghomwan for special praise.

While celebrating the achievement, he challenged the technical crew to immediately begin preparations for upcoming competitions, particularly the National Sports Festival in Enugu, urging them to discover and groom fresh talents who have not featured in major tournaments before.

“We are no longer underdogs,” Enabulele declared. “We must work harder to sustain this momentum and raise new champions for Edo State.”

The chairman emphasised that the triumph was the result of structured planning, professional coaching, and the resilience of athletes who embodied the state’s renewed winning mentality.
