Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday said the Federal Government will intensify engagement with key stakeholders and development partners to strengthen humanitarian responses across the country.
He spoke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), led by Ms Doris El Doueihy.
Shettima said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to addressing humanitarian challenges nationwide, stressing that collaboration with organisations such as the Red Cross is critical to resolving existing gaps in response mechanisms.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha Shettima said: “It is only when we continue engaging with organisations like the Red Cross that we can address some of the grey areas in our humanitarian responses across the country”.
He commended the ICRC for its professionalism and dedication to promoting peace and justice, particularly in conflict-affected areas, and welcomed its proposal to establish a national humanitarian response mechanism in Nigeria.
According to him, the Federal Government is ready to partner with the organisation to develop and operationalise the framework, particularly to address the needs of victims of armed conflict.

Shettima also assured that Nigeria’s security forces would continue to operate in line with international standards and guidelines, describing them as among the most professional globally.
Earlier, the ICRC delegation leader, Doris El Doueihy, praised Nigeria for domesticating the Kampala Convention for the protection and assistance of internally displaced persons (IDPs), noting that the country has set a standard for others across Africa.
She said the visit was aimed at reinforcing the organisation’s long-standing relationship with Nigeria, adding that the ICRC remains committed to supporting humanitarian efforts in areas such as healthcare, water provision, and training of security personnel.
Also present at the meeting was the President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga, alongside other officials.
