The federal government urged Nigerians in Iran and its neighbouring Gulf countries to limit movement following the commencement of hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran.
Iran came under a joint attack by US and Israel early hours of Saturday 28 February 2026.
The federal government in its advisory which was signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa urged Nigerians residing in the gulf countries and those visiting to, “remain extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times. Avoid areas known to be strategic, military, or government installations, as these could be potential flashpoints.
“It is strongly recommended that Nigerians restrict non-essential movement and travel within the countries until the security situation becomes clearer and stabilizes. Avoid large gatherings and public demonstrations.
“Citizens are strongly advised to strictly comply with all security and safety directives issued by the local authorities to ensure their safety. Remember that cooperation with local law enforcement is paramount for safety.
“Keep abreast of news and updates from reliable international and local news sources. Be cautious of misinformation and rely on official channels for accurate and critical safety information.”
Nigerians were also asked to establish communication with the relevant Embassies, stating, “The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and affected neighbouring Gulf countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE and Saudi Arabia are on high alert to provide required consular assistance and facilitate easy communication."”
The Nigerian government also assured Nigerians in the Arabian countries that it is closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation in the Middle East, specifically regarding the military action reportedly undertaken by Israel and the United States against targets in the Islamic Republic of Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by Iran on targets in some Gulf countries.
Ebienfa noted that the government issued the advisory given the heightened state of tension and the potential for further escalations.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to assess the situation and provide further updates as necessary. We wish to assure the general public that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remain the top priority of the federal government.”
The government of Nigeria also urged all the parties to the conflict to de-escalate the crisis by returning to the negotiation table for the interests of global peace and coexistence.
