The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has intervened in the protracted leadership crisis within the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), formally recognizing the  Eng. Ahmadu Musa Kida-led board and establishing a non-negotiable deadline for new elections.

In a move intended to quell months of administrative instability, a letter dated March 16, 2026, and signed by FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, confirmed that the world governing body recognizes the current board's mandate as valid through October 15, 2026.

But  FIBA has dictated a strict roadmap for the NBBF’s transition, ordering that new elections must be conducted only after the conclusion of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Crucially, the global body has frozen any attempts to alter the federation's governing documents, stating it will not recognize any amendments to NBBF statutes made before the elections. FIBA directed that the upcoming polls be conducted strictly under the current legal framework and in full compliance with FIBA General Statutes.

The directive  is not unconnected  with the bitter divide between Nigerian basketball stakeholders. Opposition groups have long argued that the board’s four-year term expired in January 2026, four years after the previous elections. However, the Kida leadership maintained that their tenure officially began upon their formal inauguration later in 2022.

By setting the October date, FIBA has effectively dismissed claims of an immediate power vacuum while imposing a hard  clause on the current administration.

The intervention underscores FIBA’s role as the final arbiter in the governance of its member federations. Insiders suggest the directive serves as a "final warning" against parallel elections or mid-stream statutory changes, which have historically plagued the sport in Nigeria.

The letter explicitly signals that any deviation from this roadmap or breach of FIBA directives could trigger severe sanctions, including the potential suspension of Nigeria from all international basketball competitions.
