A community-driven healthcare intervention has brought relief to residents of Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State as a free hernia surgery programme, organised in partnership with the Yayi Vanguard Empowerment Foundation, kicked off with dozens of beneficiaries receiving treatment.

The initiative is championed by Prince Olusola Olabode, a member of the Yayi Vanguard, who described the programme as a humanitarian effort to assist people who can't afford medication.

Speaking during the outreach recently, in Abeokuta, Olabode said the programme was conceived to assist residents living with untreated hernia due to financial constraints. “I felt compelled to do something because many people are living with this condition simply because they cannot afford surgery. It is not convenient or dignifying for anyone to live in such pain when help can be provided,” he said.

He added that the programme would remain a continuous initiative rather than a one-off intervention.

According to him, “This free hernia surgery programme is a demonstration of what it means to put people first. Responsible leadership is about impact, not just promises; it is about reaching the grassroots, touching lives directly and restoring dignity to our people.”

He further praised Senator Adeola's vision, saying the initiative reflects a broader commitment to the welfare of residents across Ogun State.

“His vision goes beyond politics; it is rooted in genuine concern for the health and prosperity of the people. This programme shows that a different government is coming—one that truly cares,” he stated, adding that the outreach will expand beyond Abeokuta North to Abeokuta South Local Government Area and other areas in the next phase.

Meanwhile, Medical Director of First Contact Hospital and Maternity, Dr Olugbenga Alabi Fagbenro, explained that beneficiaries would receive free post-surgery follow-up and medication. “

"Hernias can be congenital or caused by strenuous activities such as lifting heavy objects. Farmers and manual workers are particularly at risk."

He added that reducing heavy lifting remains the main preventive measure for non-congenital cases.

Also speaking, former councillor of Ward 14 in Abeokuta North, Fagbenro Mukaila, popularly known as ASA, commended the organisers for easing the burden on residents.

He urged citizens across the state to support Senator Adeola's 2027 gubernatorial ambition, describing the initiative as a timely intervention for people who cannot afford surgery.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the opportunity. Saidat Akinola from Ward 15, Ilewo Orile, said, “I am very happy for this opportunity. I have used several drugs, but today I received surgery without paying a dime.”

Another beneficiary, Elegbede Atanda from Isaga Orile, described the outreach as life-changing and encouraged philanthropists to support the poor and vulnerable in their communities.
