The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, has called for stronger collaboration between legal institutions and government agencies, saying Nigeria’s justice system must remain central to national development, democratic stability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

He said a strong and independent legal system remains essential to sustaining governance reforms and ensuring public confidence in the rule of law.

“The legal profession remains a fundamental pillar in safeguarding democracy, ensuring justice, and promoting peace and stability within society,” he said.

Goronyo spoke in Sokoto at the 2026 Caliphate Bar Week organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Sokoto State Branch.

The event, themed “A Secure Nation, A Secure Future,” drew legal practitioners, jurists, policymakers, and other stakeholders to examine the role of the legal profession in advancing national security, governance, and sustainable development.

The week-long programme, held under the leadership of Barr. Rashidat Mohammed, Chairperson of the NBA Sokoto Branch, featured panel sessions, policy dialogues, and networking engagements focused on strengthening the administration of justice and professional standards.

Goronyo, according to a statement on Wednesday by his Special Assistant (SA) on Media, Abdullahi Mohammed, stressed that Nigeria’s development objectives cannot be achieved without an effective justice system anchored on integrity and professionalism.

“A strong, independent, and ethical legal system is indispensable to the attainment of national development goals and the protection of citizens’ rights,” he said.

He urged legal practitioners to uphold professional standards and ethical conduct, noting that emerging social and governance challenges have increased the responsibility of the Bar.

He also called for closer synergy between legal institutions and public agencies to improve access to justice and strengthen institutional trust.

The Minister said such collaboration is necessary to drive reforms that enhance transparency and accountability in governance.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to institutional reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, particularly in promoting accountability and national cohesion.

Goronyo commended the Sokoto State Government for its investments in the justice sector, saying such interventions are strengthening judicial efficiency and public confidence.

He said the efforts were critical to deepening the rule of law and improving governance outcomes at the subnational level.

The Minister also encouraged continued engagement among legal stakeholders to ensure that the justice system remains responsive and aligned with global best practices.
