Grange School reasserted its status as a premier athletics powerhouse this weekend, clinching the Season 3 title of The Athletics School Games (TASG) at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex. The victory, however, shared headlines with a massive individual feat by International School Lagos (ISL) athlete Ehuwa Obanla, who shattered the tournament high jump record.

The World Athletics-certified meet featured over 317 athletes representing more than 20 schools across Lagos.

Grange School’s path to the trophy began on Day One, where their elementary pupils outclassed rivals to build a commanding points lead. The momentum carried into Day Two as the secondary category faced stiff opposition from Riverbank School and ISL. While the rivalry intensified during field events, Grange’s depth in the relay and track disciplines allowed them to pull away, finishing ahead of Riverbank and ISL to lift the coveted championship trophy.

The technical highlight of the final day was delivered by ISL’s Ehuwa Obanla. Entering the competition with a personal best (PB) of 1.75m, Obanla cleared 1.95m—a 20cm improvement that set a new tournament record. The performance drew a standing ovation from technical officials and spectators alike, marking one of the most significant statistical leaps in the tournament's history.

Despite the success of the event, TASG Founder Dr. Seun Akinbohun noted that elite youth sports in the region continue to face logistical hurdles.

"We have had some incredible moments. Records were broken, from the high jump to the relays and throws," Akinbohun stated. "Thank God for the journey so far, and thank you to the parents, athletes, schools, coaches, sponsors, and partners."

Akinbohun acknowledged that while funding and infrastructure remain persistent challenges, the tournament's role as a talent pipeline is already being realized. She confirmed that several athletes discovered through TASG have already transitioned into the Nigerian national team setup.

The tournament, which received formal endorsement from the Lagos State Athletics Association (LSAA), serves as a precursor to upcoming regional events.

"We look forward to welcoming more schools next year," Akinbohun added, "and we are excited about the TASG Relays coming up in May."

With over 300 participants and a World Athletics certification, Season 3 has established a new benchmark for school-level sports administration in Nigeria.
