The Calabar South Professionals for Good Governance has called for increased transparency and public accountability in the execution of constituency projects valued at ₦1.505 billion in Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency.
In a statement signed by the group’s Convener, Comrade Edet Asuquo, on Wednesday, the organisation urged more public access to information relating to projects and intervention programmes associated with the constituency represented by Hon. Joseph Bassey in the House of Representatives.
The statement, titled “Calabar South Professionals for Good Governance Demand Accountability from Hon. Joseph Bassey Over ₦1.505 Billion Constituency Projects,” said the call was aimed at promoting openness and strengthening public confidence in governance.
The group acknowledged interventions carried out in the constituency, including a free medical outreach and the construction of a classroom block at Edgerly Ballantyne Memorial Primary School.
It, however, encouraged the publication of further details on constituency projects and programmes to enable residents to better track ongoing and completed interventions.
According to the statement, the requested information includes project locations, implementation timelines, contractors involved, beneficiary lists for empowerment programmes and reports on completed projects.
The group also highlighted projects and programmes reportedly captured in the constituency’s intervention plans for 2025, including food distribution initiatives, grants for market women and youths, women and youth empowerment schemes, solar streetlights and solar-powered boreholes.
It stressed the importance of proper documentation and public access to information on constituency projects as part of efforts to promote transparency, accountability and effective service delivery.
The organisation further called on oversight bodies, civil society organisations and the media to continue supporting initiatives that encourage openness in public administration.
“The people of Calabar South are committed to good governance and inclusive development. Public accountability remains essential in ensuring that constituency projects deliver maximum benefits to residents,” the statement added.
