Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has indicated a possible interest in a return to the 2027 presidential race, saying he will consult widely before making any decision.
Jonathan made the remark while responding to a large crowd of supporters under the banner of the Coalition for Jonathan 2027, who marched to his office to urge him to contest the next presidential election.
Addressing the group, the former president emphasised patriotism, peace, and the need for greater youth participation in the electoral process.
He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s persistently low voter turnout despite its large voting population, urging young people to obtain their voter cards and become more politically engaged.
While acknowledging the appeal to return to the presidential race, Jonathan stopped short of a formal declaration but left the door open.
“I’ve heard you, and I will consult widely,” he said, a statement widely interpreted as his strongest indication yet of possible participation in the 2027 contest.
The Coalition for Jonathan 2027, led by Dr. Tom Ohikere, had earlier submitted a formal appeal during the visit, recalling a previous engagement on April 8, 2026, when they first made the request.
In their message, the group expressed concern over what they described as Nigeria’s worsening political and security situation, insisting that Jonathan’s return would help stabilise the country.
They called on him to formally declare interest in the race, obtain a nomination form from any political party of his choice, and contest the 2027 presidential election. The coalition also pledged full support across political divides if he agrees to run.
The statement, signed by Dr Ohikere as National President of the coalition, described Jonathan as a unifying figure whose leadership, they argued, is urgently needed at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history.
