Opposition parties in Nigeria are considering fielding a consensus presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The parties said the proposed candidate would be jointly agreed upon and backed by all participating platforms as part of efforts to unseat the ruling APC.
They also vowed to resist what they described as attempts by the APC to foist a one-party state on the country, insisting on the need to preserve Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

The resolutions were contained in a communique issued at the end of a National Summit of Opposition Party Leaders held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday.
The summit, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” brought together national chairmen of opposition parties, former governors, and key political stakeholders from across the country.
In the communique, titled “Ibadan Declaration,” the parties stated that despite what they termed ongoing political manoeuvres by the ruling party, they would field candidates and actively contest the 2027 presidential and other elections.
Prominent figures at the summit, hosted by Seyi Makinde, included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
Other attendees included Jerry Gana, Pat Utomi, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Kashim Ibrahim Imam, Abdulfatai Ahmed, and Babangida Aliyu, among others.
Political parties represented at the meeting included the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Labour Party (LP), Accord Party, NDC, APP, and APM, as well as AA, DLA, YP, ADP, and ZLP.
The event was coordinated by an organising committee co-chaired by Jerry Gana and Kashim Ibrahim Imam.
