The Institute of Loss Adjusters of Nigeria (ILAN) has called for stricter market compliance and enhanced professional development across the insurance industry, following a courtesy visit to the National Insurance Commission.

The delegation, led by ILAN President, Ikechukwu Udobi, met with the Commissioner for Insurance, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, to discuss key issues affecting the loss adjusting profession and the broader insurance market.

Speaking during the visit, Udobi expressed appreciation to NAICOM for the successful revision of the Loss Adjusters’ Scale of Fees, describing it as a landmark achievement that signals renewed momentum for a profession that has experienced decades of stagnation.

He stressed the urgent need for continuous training and capacity-building initiatives, particularly in specialised areas such as energy, oil and gas, and special risks. According to him, strengthening technical expertise in these sectors is essential to positioning Nigerian loss adjusters in line with global best practices.

Udobi also advocated deeper collaboration between local and international loss adjusters to promote knowledge transfer and accelerate industry development.

On regulation, the ILAN President called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and market guidelines, urging NAICOM to ensure full compliance among operators. He further appealed to the Commission for support in securing a befitting national secretariat for the Institute to enhance its administrative efficiency.

Responding, Mr. Omosehin commended the Institute for its proactive engagement and reaffirmed NAICOM’s commitment to supporting all segments of the insurance industry as part of its ongoing reform and transformation agenda.

The Commissioner underscored the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct in loss adjusting, noting that practitioners serve as a critical link between policyholders and insurers, particularly in claims resolution.

Both parties also highlighted the need for strict adherence to the Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics for Loss Adjusters as a means of strengthening credibility, trust, and service delivery within the profession.
