The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing her as the substantive minister.
Mrs. Odumegwu-Ojukwu conveyed her appreciation in a statement issued in Abuja by her Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Dr. Magnus Eze. She described the appointment as an honour and pledged renewed commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and protecting national interests.
The minister said she received news of her elevation during a dinner organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to conclude a three-day induction programme for ambassadors and high commissioners-designate and their spouses. The event became her first official function as substantive minister.
In a message posted on her X handle, the minister said she was humbled by the confidence reposed in her by the President, reaffirming her commitment to promoting Nigeria’s interests globally and supporting the 4D foreign policy priorities of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who assumed office as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on November 4, 2024, was elevated following the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down to pursue his political ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Also, the President has nominated Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, subject to Senate confirmation.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide also congratulated Odumegwu-Ojukwu on her appointment, describing it as recognition of her competence, diplomatic experience and commitment to national service.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, the group said her previous roles as Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora, Ambassador to Spain and Ghana, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs reflected her leadership and dedication to Nigeria’s international engagement.
The President-General of the organisation, Azuta Mbata, described her as a worthy representative of Igbo people and Nigeria, expressing confidence in her ability to strengthen the country’s foreign relations.
Similarly, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, commended President Tinubu for a “deserving appointment”.
Udeze said Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s training, experience and record positioned her to perform effectively in the role. He added that her service had continued to bring pride to Anambra State, expressing confidence that she would strengthen Nigeria’s foreign policy direction.
He urged Nigerians to support the minister to enable her to succeed in her new assignment.
