Security operatives have rescued nine children abducted from St. John Catholic Church Ojije in Utonkon, Ado Local Government Area of Benue state.

Governor Hyacinth Alia commended the security agencies for what he described as a prompt and coordinated operation that led to the safe recovery of the children.

The governor, who received the news with relief, praised the collaboration between conventional security forces and local vigilante groups, noting that the joint effort ensured the victims’ safe return.

He stated that security remains the foundation of development and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with federal security agencies, community leaders, traditional institutions and local security outfits to guarantee that residents live without fear and that Benue remains a land of peace, justice and coexistence.

Alia assured residents that security agencies and vigilante groups would sustain joint operations to tackle kidnapping and forestall future incidents.

He added that intelligence gathering and information sharing had been intensified to track down perpetrators and improve operational outcomes.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

Following the abduction, the governor convened a high-level security meeting on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the palace of the Och’Idoma in Otukpo.

The meeting, which involved the Idoma Traditional Council and senior security officials, resulted in a directive—issued through a delegation led by his deputy, Sam Ode—for the immediate release of the victims.

The rescued children comprise six girls and three boys.
