Labake Olododo has been very successful at the Nigerian box office. It grossed ₦202 million within the first two weeks, and opened ₦50.4 million within the first three days. As it stayed at the top of the box-office charts for consecutive weekends, it quickly became the second movie to surpass the ₦200 million benchmark last year.

Period Dramas are Returning Once Again

As Labake Olododo was so successful, it’s clear that audiences are once again rediscovering how much they enjoy period storytelling. Whether it’s through books, television, or film, there’s a notable resurgence right now. On streaming platforms,  shows like Vikings are a clear example of how history can be brought back to life. Interestingly, our love for history is having an impact on other verticals, outside the TV and movie sector.

Museums are seeing a 10% increase in footfall right now, with many investing in VR tours to try to reach bigger audiences. Many developers are also working on VR tours so people can walk through ancient virtual cities, bringing certain periods in time back to life once again. iGaming reflects this fascination as well.

Historical themes and even mythical settings continue to draw attention to this day, as exemplified in video slots like Eye of Horus: Legacy of Gold, Temple of Iris, and Age of the Gods: Gold Trio. Titles like this focus on mythology and imagery, bringing history to life in whole new formats. When you consider this trend, it's not hard to see why Labake Olododo was such a huge success. The movie focuses on a pre-colonial village and combines history with traditional music and strong cultural references, which is exactly the type of content that modern audiences are gravitating towards right now.

Cast's Gratitude

The Chief Executive Officer who worked on the movie has expressed his gratitude at how well the movie has done. He’s said that it’s satisfying to see the result of all of their hard work and how they really are getting out what they put in.

The lead actress, Iyabo Ojo, has also said that the film has been very well received and is pleased to see that it is now in cinemas across the world. Labake Olododo has English subtitles, so giving it a worldwide distribution made perfect sense. The authenticity of the movie could be maintained by embracing the original language spoken. It mixes comedy and drama with strong themes of romance and power, meaning it covers all the bases of a good period drama.

If you want to watch the movie, then you’ll be glad to know that it is currently on selective streaming services, including KAVA.tv. Even though Labake Olododo is not available on a worldwide streaming service yet, its success means that a global streaming release could be on the horizon, and this could bolster its popularity even more over the coming months. If a worldwide release were supported, this could also open the door to more Nollywood releases in the future.
