The Lagos State Government has held the maiden edition of its “Care for the Elderly” initiative in Badagry and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Areas.
The programme, organised by the Office of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implemented by Green Lunar Nigeria Limited, attracted over 500 senior citizens aged 60 and above.
Designed to support elderly residents, the initiative provided healthcare services, wellness support, and opportunities for social engagement.
Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Hon. Babatunde Adande Hunpe, commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for extending the programme to the area. He also praised the State SDGs Office for prioritising the welfare of senior citizens and called for similar interventions across other communities.
Hunpe further acknowledged the role of Green Lunar Nigeria Limited in coordinating the programme, describing it as impactful and well organised.
Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, said the initiative was conceived to address the limited attention often given to elderly citizens in community-based welfare programmes.
She noted that while healthcare formed the entry point of the intervention, the broader goal is to ensure that older persons remain recognised, respected, and actively involved in community life.

Also speaking, Dr. Amina Ahmad-Bello, Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, Lagos State Health District V, emphasised the importance of regular medical screening and preventive care for the elderly, citing common age-related conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and mobility challenges.
She added that emotional and social wellbeing should also be prioritised, noting that inclusion and community support are key to healthy ageing.
Chief Executive Officer of Green Lunar Nigeria Limited, Olaniyi Odina, expressed appreciation to residents for their turnout and cooperation, as well as to local authorities for their support.
He disclosed that the next phase of the initiative would be held in Ibeju-Lekki, as part of efforts to expand its reach across communities.
The event featured free medical consultations, health screenings, distribution of essential items, and interactive sessions aimed at promoting healthy living among elderly residents.
