The Lagos State government has sealed some buildings, shopping malls and hotels for failing to comply with lift safety regulations.
The enforcement, carried out by Lagos State Safety Commission, affected more than 12 facilities across key locations, including Admiralty Way in Lekki Phase 1 and parts of Ikeja.
Officials said the action followed failure by property owners and managers to register their lift systems with the state government for inspection, maintenance and safety monitoring.
Leading the enforcement team, the commission’s Chief Scientific Officer, Sovi Tijani, representing the Director-General, Lanre Mojola, said the clampdown became necessary after disregarding their directives.
He said registration of lifts was crucial to ensuring routine inspection and safeguarding users in public and private buildings.
Mojola said the affected facilities had been served notices and reminders, but failed to comply within the stipulated time frame.
“We duly served them notices, informing them of the need to comply before the expiration of the deadline, but they failed to do so.
“Some refused to acknowledge or collect the letters from our officials, while others attempted to obstruct our personnel during enforcement,” he added.

He said the agency would sustain its enforcement drive to protect lives and property, warning that poorly maintained lifts posed safety risks.
Among the facilities shut are The Heritage/AXA on Awolowo Road, Ikeja; Mosesola House, Debour House, Bosch House at Soji Adepegba Close; Bridge View, Elizabeth Court, 10Bou Towers, Brion Court, Footpints Apartments, Lekki Luxury Flats and Brasas Mall on Admiralty Way, Lekki.
The commission urged building owners, facility managers and operators to comply with safety regulations by registering their lift systems and ensuring regular maintenance, in line with government standards.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe environment, warning that defaulters would continue to face sanctions until full compliance is achieved.
