The Lagos state government has unveiled a comprehensive set of cybersecurity guidelines to strengthen digital safety for businesses, public institutions, and residents.

The framework, released as part of efforts to position the state as a smart and globally competitive digital hub, provides practical measures to curb rising cyber threats across sectors.

According to the government, the initiative comes amid growing concerns over cybercrime, with the National Information Technology Development Agency estimating that Nigeria loses more than $500 million annually to cyber-related offences.

The guidelines outline scalable, user-friendly cybersecurity practices for small, medium, and large enterprises, as well as for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

They are aligned with key national regulations, including the Cybercrime Act, the Nigeria Data Protection Act, and the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy.

The government clarified that the document is not a regulatory instrument but a strategic guide designed to equip stakeholders with practical tools to manage cyber risks.

It reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure digital environment that encourages innovation, attracts investment, and strengthens public trust in the state’s digital ecosystem.

The Lagos State Government also commended the Lagos State Cybersecurity Advisory Council, chaired by Fene Osakwe, for providing technical leadership in the development of the framework.

Special recognition was given to the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Tubosun Alake, for his role in driving the initiative.

The government noted that the guidelines would enhance public-private collaboration and ensure that organizations, from small businesses to multinational firms, can operate confidently in a secure digital space.

It added that the framework would be reviewed periodically to address emerging threats and evolving technologies, in line with the state’s broader digital transformation agenda.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the move underscores Lagos State’s commitment to safeguarding digital assets and sustaining its position as a leading technology hub.
