The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has warned residents of government-owned housing estates against erecting illegal structures and violating estate regulations, reaffirming its resolve to restore order and preserve the original design of public housing schemes across the state.

Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola gave the warning during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Alausa Secretariat.

Toriola expressed concern over what he described as the alarming level of contraventions in Ojokoro Estate, noting that the extent of unauthorised extensions and illegal developments became evident during his recent inspection of the estate.

“The ministry will not fold its arms and allow the distortion of the original master plan of any state-owned estate. All allottees were duly informed of the rules guiding their properties before allocation, as contained in the Allottee’s Guide. Any breach will attract appropriate sanctions,” he said.

He disclosed that the ministry had secured approval to remove illegal structures and commence rejuvenation of the estate in line with approved layout and planning standards.

According to him, affected residents have been given four months to remove all identified infractions, stressing that the exercise is aimed at restoring order, improving security, and enhancing the general outlook of the estate, rather than punishing residents.

The permanent secretary also dismissed claims that some contraventions were approved by the Lagos Building Investment Company (LBIC).

Toriola stressed that preservation of state housing assets is a collective responsibility, noting that government estates were developed according to specific planning standards.

He warned that any alteration inconsistent with approved plans could compromise infrastructure, environmental balance, and public safety.

The ministry further advised residents across all Lagos State government estates to strictly comply with existing regulations, stating that the government would not hesitate to enforce corrective measures to protect public assets and maintain the structural integrity of its housing schemes.
