The Lagos state government has distributed life-saving healthcare commodities to Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe, as part of efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

The Permanent Secretary, Health District III, Monsurat Adeleke, disclosed this during the distribution exercise held at the district office in Ikoyi.

She said the intervention aligns with the state government’s drive towards universal healthcare coverage under the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

“Today’s distribution of life-saving commodities is a strategic intervention. We are equipping our Primary Healthcare Centres, which are the bedrock of our health system, with essential tools required to save lives at critical moments,” she said.

Adeleke explained that the commodities were carefully selected to address preventable causes of maternal and child deaths, particularly during childbirth and early childhood.

She listed some of the items to include Oxytocin and Misoprostol for the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage, as well as Chlorhexidine, Zinc, and Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) for child health support.

The permanent secretary added that medical consumables such as gloves, syringes, and delivery kits were also distributed to ensure safe and hygienic service delivery by healthcare workers.

She urged Officers-in-Charge and midwives across PHCs to make the commodities readily available to patients at no cost.

“These commodities must not be locked away while mothers and children are in need. They are meant to be used promptly to save lives,” she said.

Adeleke maintained that PHCs across the district are adequately stocked and encouraged residents to seek professional medical care rather than resort to unsafe alternatives.

Responding, the Head of Pharmaceutical Unit, Epe PHC, Temitope Adeyemi, commended the initiative and assured that the commodities would be properly utilised to improve healthcare delivery.

He said the intervention would strengthen service provision at the grassroots and contribute to better health outcomes for mothers and children.
