The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) on Saturday, May 2, 2026 held the grand finale of the Digital Literacy for Ikorodu Trade (DLIT) programme, wherein the beneficiaries bagged certificates of participation.
The event which ran for four consecutive weekends from April 11, 2026, was a corporate social responsibility initiative of the university for its host communities aimed at empowering the beneficiaries with digital literacy skills necessary to improve and upgrade their their trades.
A total of 20 Ikorodu-based traders were shortlisted and trained extensively at the university’s digital learning centre, Ikorodu Campus, on content creation, digital marketing, business analytics, advertising, brand building and positioning, among other areas, with a view to repositioning their trades for a global audience.
In his address titled: “Growing Your Business Using Digital Tools and Skills,” the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, congratulated the participants for completing the programme, explaining that “the initiative was an investment by our institution which reflects the benefits universities bring to their host communities,” maintaining further that the programme was a demonstration of the town and gown relationship aspect of the university’s “IMPACT” agenda.
While urging them to maximise the deliverables from the outreach, he stated that the goal of the initiative was to see them succeed in their various trades, stressing that the event now leaves them at a crossroad.
“You now have choices: to remain with manual methods of promoting your business through word of mouth, personal contact, static billboards, or to establish a digital presence and be visible globally. In any field of training, the coach or manager will guide, teach, but it’s up to the players or students to use the knowledge and skills to produce results. This is our charge to you,” Odusanya said.
On his part, Dr Steven Anu’ Adesemoye, the Team Lead, LASUSTECH’s Digital and Creative Enterprise, expressed confidence in the level and quality of training dished out to participants, with a high level of expected results.
In his words,
“We have added value to you, go out there, add value to your business and your community. Share the knowledge you have acquired from this training, and become the good ambassadors of LASUSTECH,” he admonished.
Williams Abigail Edet, one of the outstanding participants by virtue of the evaluation of her project content quality, explained in an interview that the outreach was timely as it provided her the opportunity to learn about brand positioning for her perfumery business which, consequent upon the training, has ultimately been repositioned, disclosing further, that her small business has gradually begun generating customer traffic, expressing profound gratitude to the university for the initiative.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor in an interview disclosed that the initiative would continue beyond the first edition, expressing also, the readiness of the university to monitor and evaluate the performances of the maiden edition for effectiveness.
