Nigeria’s high-profile international friendlies against Iran and Jordan are teetering on the brink of cancellation following a massive escalation in Middle East hostilities.

What was meant to be a crucial rebuilding window for the Super Eagles under head coach Éric Chelle has been overshadowed by "Operation Epic Fury"—a joint US-Israeli military strike on Iranian targets launched on February 28—and subsequent retaliatory strikes across the region.

The four-nation invitational tournament in Amman featuring Nigeria, Iran, Jordan and Costa Rica, has now been overshadowed by the direct military confrontation between the US/Israel and Iran, with retaliatory strikes hitting assets in Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

While the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to issue a formal withdrawal, sources indicate that the safety of the players—including stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman—is the absolute priority.

The inclusion of Iran in the tournament has become the primary flashpoint. With Tehran currently engaged in active combat operations, the feasibility of their national team ("Team Melli") traveling to Jordan is in doubt. Furthermore, Iran’s retaliatory strikes have reportedly impacted parts of Jordan, the very host of the competition.

"The safety of our players and technical crew is non-negotiable," a source close to the NFF stated. "We are monitoring diplomatic advisories minute-by-minute. Playing football in a potential war zone is a risk no one wants to take."

The timing is a significant blow for Coach Chelle. Having recently led Nigeria to a bronze medal at AFCON 2025, Chelle was using these matches to integrate new talent while the NFF awaits a FIFA verdict regarding a protest against DR Congo.

If the tournament is scrapped, it leaves the Super Eagles without a competitive platform during the March window, stalling the momentum built over the last 12 months.
