Ministers list gains of Tinubu's reforms as Nigeria hosts World Public Relations forum

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, have listed the gains of the reforms initiated by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, and their significance to the growth and development of the country. 

They emphasised the need to strengthen collaboration with one another in communicating the gains of the reforms to Nigerians. 

Tunji-Ojo highlighted reforms in Passport Services, Border Security and Identity Management, while the Minister of Information and National Orientation said accurate information dissemination on government policies would improve Nigeria global image and attract investors. 

He spoke when he received the Minister of Information and National Orientation and his delegation at the Ministry of Interior in Abuja on Tuesday. 

He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to enhance public communication of key reforms, policies and achievements of the Federal Government under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to a statement from the Director of Press in the Ministry of.Interior, Mrs Mary Ali, the Minister emphasized the importance of partnership between both ministries in promoting transparency, national orientation and accurate dissemination of government policies.

Tunji-Ojo said significant reforms have been implemented across the agencies under his supervision, leading to measurable improvements in service delivery and national security.

He listed amongst others the clearing of 204,000 passport backlogs inherited in 2023, introduction of a contactless passport application system, enabling Nigerians in the diaspora to renew their passports using mobile devices without visiting embassies.

He listed establishmebt of Centralised Passport Production system, Global Passport Verification as Nigeria became integrated into the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD), enabling Nigerian passports to be verified at border control systems worldwide.

He also listed Advanced Border Security: Deployment of Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems to pre-screen travellers before arrival in Nigeria and Establishment of an 8.3-petabyte immigration data centre to support modern migration management and border control operations amongst others. 

He said the achievements recorded across the Ministry required stronger public awareness and communication. He therefore called for deeper collaboration with the Ministry of Information and National Orientation to ensure Nigerians are fully informed about the reforms and services available to them.

He also invited the Ministry of Information to collaborate on a coordinated communication strategy and undertake a project tour of key facilities under the Ministry of Interior to showcase on-going reforms.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation commended Dr Tunji-Ojo for the significant reforms implemented across the agencies under the Ministry, describing the transformation within the Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, Federal Fire Service, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps as remarkable.

He noted that aligning government messaging on security developments would help improve Nigeria’s global image, attract foreign investment, and ensure that accurate information about the country’s progress is communicated internationally.

The Minister further announced that Nigeria will host the World Public Relations Forum later this year in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR). He said the event will bring communication professionals from around the world to Nigeria and is expected to further enhance the country’s global image.

He called on the Ministry of Interior to support the event through visa facilitation and protocol arrangements for international delegates.

Both Ministers noted that the progress recorded in the last two and a half years reflects a strong commitment to institutional reform and improved service delivery, and agreed to deepen collaboration in strategic communication to ensure that Nigeria’s governance reforms, security improvements and development initiatives are effectively communicated to the world.
