The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, announced this in a statement in Jos.

She said the curfew followed the attack on Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba last Sunday, which resulted in the loss of 28 lives with several others wounded.

The curfew, which took effect last Sunday, would end tomorrow.

The government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

”Citizens are urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing any useful information that may aid ongoing investigations,’’ she added.

UNIJOS shut

Also, the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has been closed indefinitely because of the curfew in Jos North council.

In a statement, the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, said their examinations scheduled for Monday, and yesterday had been put on hold.

Atiku condemns attack

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the attack in Gari Ya Waye, describing it as a barbaric act and a sign of worsening insecurity.

In a statement, Atiku expressed outrage over the assault, which claimed several innocent Nigerians and left many others injured.

He called for urgent and decisive political will to confront and eliminate the threat, stressing that continued attacks on innocent citizens must not be normalised.

Atiku extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, offering prayers for strength and comfort in what he described as a painful and dark moment.

He urged the authorities to take steps to restore safety and protect lives across the country.

CAN reacts

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) urged the government to act fast and arrest those responsible for the killing that took place on Palm Sunday.

While condemning the incident, CAN said Nigerians were tired of mourning, in a statement by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in Abuja.

“The Christian Association of Nigeria condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the horrific attack that took place on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Angwan Rukuba, Gari Ya Waye,  Jos North, Plateau State.

“Palm Sunday is meant to be a day of peace, of hope, of reflection. Instead, it became a day of bloodshed. Innocent Nigerians; men, women and children were hunted and killed in cold blood. Let us be clear: this is not just tragic; it is unacceptable,’’ the cleric added.

The incident, which occurred about 11:47 p.m. last Sunday, has heightened concerns over persistent attacks on rural communities in the state.

A resident of Kagarko, Shehu Bala, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said the attackers stormed the venue in large numbers, armed with AK-47 rifles, and opened fire on guests.

“The bandits came in large numbers and started shooting in the hall. Many people were hit, and several others were taken away,” he said.

He added that victims who sustained injuries were rushed to the General Hospital in Kagarko, while two others with severe injuries were referred to Kaduna for advanced treatment.

“In fact, two of my friends who were in the hall also sustained bullet injuries during the attack,” he said.

Bala noted that the exact number of those abducted remains unclear due to the chaotic nature of the incident.

“But one cannot ascertain the number of those kidnapped because of the sporadic shooting,” he added.

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers operated for nearly one hour without resistance.

“They moved freely, invaded shops and carted away foodstuff, provisions and drugs from a chemist in the community,” he said.

He added that those killed in the attack have since been buried, while efforts to establish contact with the abductors have not been successful.

Police confirm attack on Zamfara community

The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed that bandits attacked Dangoro village in Bungudu Local Government.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yazid Abubakar, said about 2230 hours, last Saturday, a group of bandits carrying AK-47 rifles attacked Dangoro village via Nahuche District in Bungudu Local Government Area.

In a statement,  Abubakar said the assailants invaded the community, shooting sporadically and setting villagers’ houses and silos ablaze.

“Upon receipt of the report, a joint team of Police operatives and vigilante members swiftly mobilised and responded to the scene. The team engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel, successfully repelling the attack and forcing the criminals to flee into the bush with possible gunshot injuries,1                                       Yazid said.

“Regrettably, three persons lost their lives during the incident, including a member of the Community Protection Guard. Additionally, five persons sustained gunshot injuries, while four others suffered varying degrees of burn injuries. PPRO said.

The injured victims have been evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, where they are receiving treatment and responding positively, he added.

Yazid further said the bandits also burnt several houses, silos containing food grains, and livestock, including goats.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, assured the people of the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, and urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information.
