Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc has paid a total of N13.6 billion in claims to policyholders in the first quarter of 2026, reinforcing its position as a reliable player in Nigeria’s insurance industry.

The underwriting firm said the payout, which covers both its General Insurance and Life Business portfolios between January and March, reflects its commitment to prompt claims settlement and customer satisfaction.

Managing Director of the company, Olufemi Asenuga, said claims payment remains the strongest test of an insurer’s credibility.

According to him, every settled claim represents a promise fulfilled, helping families recover from losses and enabling businesses to regain stability after unforeseen events.

He added that the company would continue to uphold high standards in underwriting, service delivery and claims responsiveness across its operations.

The development comes at a time the industry is undergoing reforms, including recapitalisation efforts aimed at strengthening operators and improving market confidence.

Analysts have consistently identified prompt claims settlement as a critical driver of trust and one of the most effective ways to deepen insurance penetration in the country.

Despite its growth potential, Nigeria’s insurance sector still records low penetration compared to global benchmarks, largely due to public skepticism around claims payment.

Against this backdrop, Mutual Benefits’ sustained payout culture is seen as a positive signal to policyholders and prospective customers.

Founded over three decades ago, the company has built its brand around reliability and nationwide reach, with a focus on meeting customer expectations.

Industry watchers note that consistent claims settlement not only enhances reputation but also drives customer retention and word-of-mouth referrals.

Recent feedback from policyholders, according to the firm, indicates growing confidence in its ability to meet obligations as they arise.

Stakeholders say such experiences are crucial in repositioning insurance as a dependable safety net for individuals and businesses.

With competition intensifying in the sector, operators are increasingly being measured not just by premium income but by their responsiveness to claims.

For Mutual Benefits, the latest payout appears to underscore a strategy anchored on trust, resilience and long-term customer value.

Observers believe that sustaining this trajectory could further strengthen the company’s standing in an evolving market.

They also stress that the broader industry must replicate such commitment if it hopes to close the trust gap and unlock its full potential.

As reforms gather pace, the spotlight is expected to remain firmly on claims settlement as the true barometer of performance in the insurance business.
