A Niger Delta-based group, the Goodluck Jonathan Legacy Project (GJLP), has faulted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his recent comments on the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, describing his remarks as “unfortunate” and lacking merit.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the group’s National Coordinator, Juan Amechee Governor, said Atiku’s claim that governance challenges during Jonathan’s tenure were due to “inexperience” was misleading and amounted to historical revisionism.

He argued that Jonathan’s political trajectory — spanning roles as deputy governor, governor, vice president, and acting president — contradicts any suggestion of inexperience.

“To describe Dr. Jonathan as ‘inexperienced’ is a flight from reality,” the statement read, adding that such criticism coming from a “career presidential candidate” raises questions about Atiku’s own record.

The group further accused Atiku of lacking the tact required for national leadership, alleging that his political career has been marked by division across parties.

Defending Jonathan’s time in office, the GJLP highlighted what it described as key achievements of his administration, including economic growth, increased foreign direct investment, and progress in agriculture.

It also referenced international recognition, including honours from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Nigeria’s role in global institutions during his tenure.

The statement also praised Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election, describing it as a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy.

The group maintained that Nigerians can distinguish between leaders with what it called “measurable achievements” and those who continue to seek power while offering retrospective criticism.

Atiku had recently attributed challenges faced during Jonathan’s administration to inexperience, sparking reactions from political stakeholders.
