The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, has said the country needs a Humanitarian Trust Fund for result-oriented poverty reduction.
He said such a trust fund would have a positive impact on the nation’s economy and the citizenry.
Doro said this while hosting the Archbishop of Abuja, Archbishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, in his office.
In a statement by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Janet Noah, the minister explained that the fight against poverty requires resources.
He noted that no government could single-handedly fund the project, hence the need for a trust fund to sustain the system.
Doro called for a creative way to source the funds and get the vulnerable populace out of poverty and become economically viable.
The minister urged development partners and philanthropists to join hands with the Federal Government through his office to help vulnerable Nigerians.
Doro said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration cares about every citizen’s welfare, hailing religious leaders for working with and supporting government efforts to care for the vulnerable.
The minister announced that the ministry was designing the “One Humanitarian, One Poverty Reduction System programme” that would enable vulnerable citizens to exit poverty and live with dignity.
Archbishop Kaigama said the purpose of the visit was to seek a partnership with the Federal Government to address the plight of vulnerable households.
He said: “We meet a lot of people in the villages who are in dire need to survive. That informed our decision to come and interact with you to see where the government can come in, since we can only do a portion.
“We are seeking a partnership with the government in areas of uplifting the vulnerable in society.”
