The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) will on 31st March and Thursday, 2nd April, 2026, lead discussions on how tax and illicit financial flows affect economic growth at the 5th session of the sub-committee on tax and illicit financial flows (IFFs) of the Specialized Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration (STC-FMAEPI).

Co-hosted with African Union Commission (AUC), the event will have in attendance policymakers, tax administrators, development partners, and experts from across Africa coming together to advance coordinated strategies for strengthening tax systems and combating illicit financial flows.

With the theme, “Building the Africa We Want Through Tax and Fiscal Policy Reforms to Support Economic Growth and Domestic Resource Mobilization.”

A statement by Sikiru Akinola, Technical Assistant (Print Media) to the Executive Chairman of the revenue agency, Zacch Adedeji Ph.D, explained that: “It is coming at a critical time when African countries are intensifying efforts to mobilize domestic resources, reduce reliance on external financing, and address illicit financial flows, which continue to undermine economic growth and development across the continent.

“Discussions will focus on enhancing domestic resource mobilisation, strengthening tax administration and compliance frameworks, addressing illicit financial flows, base erosion and profit shifting, advancing Africa’s coordinated position in global tax negotiations, and leveraging digitalisation and modern tax systems.

"The meeting builds on prior outcomes of the STC and reinforces Africa’s commitment to Agenda 2063, positioning tax policy and fiscal reforms as central to achieving sustainable development across the continent.

“As host country, Nigeria, through the NRS, is providing strategic leadership and coordination to ensure the successful delivery of the session, while also contributing to continental dialogue on tax reforms and domestic resource mobilisation.

The Executive Chairman of the NRS, Zacch Adedeji PhD., will deliver the welcome address, while the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy will formally declare the meeting open.

The session is expected to strengthen the capacity of African countries to implement effective tax reforms, promote practical solutions to curb illicit financial flows, enhance collaboration among African institutions and Member States, and support the development of unified African positions in global tax governance.

The statement further noted, “As part of its contributions, the NRS will host a side event themed “Mitigating Illicit Financial Flows by Policy and Action,” which will highlight key initiatives including the National Single Window Initiative and Asset Recovery under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

"This session is designed to provide a platform for technical engagement and capacity building among stakeholders, further reinforcing Nigeria’s leadership in advancing policy-driven solutions to illicit financial flows.”
