Speaking ahead of the team's departure, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade called on the athletes to demonstrate discipline, unity, and determination, describing the championship as a crucial platform for Nigeria to reaffirm its pedigree in international athletics.

"The entire nation stands firmly behind you," Olopade said. "We have absolute faith in your ability to deliver and make Nigeria proud."

Olopade  also disclosed that he will travel to Gaborone personally to support the team, saying his presence reflects the Federal Government's commitment to the success of Nigerian sports.

A total of 24 athletes will represent Nigeria at the competition, competing across all six relay events. The contingent — a blend of experienced and emerging athletes — departed on Monday aboard Ethiopian Airlines, with some members joining from their international bases.

He  urged the athletes to target not only podium finishes but also qualification spots for future global championships, assuring them of the Commission's full backing as well as the support of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.

This year's edition of the World Relays carries added significance, serving as a qualification pathway to the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
