Coalition of Edo State civil society has said that its investigation into last Tuesday’s incident in Benin City revealed that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi and a National Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) did not escape any assassination attempt in Edo State.

Thugs had invaded the secretariat of the Edo ADC moments after Olumide Akpata joined the party and scattered the place.

The thugs also stormed Chief Oyegun's GRA residence and reportedly attacked vehicles parked outside the residence.

But the Coalition said it spoke to members of the Edo ADC, eyewitnesses, and security operatives at Chief Oyegun's residence as part of its investigation.

The group, in a statement issued in Benin City and signed by the Convener, Braimoh Idris and Co-covener, Andrew Akhere, said it was disgusting how Obi, succeeded to spin the narrative to gain public sympathy that he escaped assassination and was shot at.

It said Chief Oyegun and Obi were never shot at by the thugs.

According to the statement, "The event at the ADC secretariat which was attended by top leaders of the party has been concluded and all dignitaries including journalists have left the venue before the so-called thugs stormed the venue.

"No gunshot was fired at the ADC secretariat. Chief Oyegun and Peter Obi were inside the fortified residence of Oyegun when the thugs arrived. The witnesses said stones were hurled at the vehicles parked outside Oyegun's residence and not gunshot.

"If Oyegun and Peter Obi were targets of assassination, why were there vehicles not affected?

"Oyegun and Obi have security escorts, how many bullets did they expend to repel the attackers.

"Our investigation showed that the ADC instigated the attacks to gain public sympathy. We want peace in Edo State. Political parties should play by the rules and not create crises where there are none."
