Bayelsa United head coach, Meremu Okara has praised his players’ determination after they secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Warri Wolves in a fiercely contested Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 30 South-South derby on Sunday.

The encounter lived up to its billing at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa with both sides showing intensity and commitment, but Bayelsa United ultimately emerged victorious to boost their fight for survival.

Speaking after the match, Okara admitted the game was always expected to be difficult given the rivalry between both teams.

“It was a tough game and just what you expect from a typical derby,” Okara told journalists. “It was fierce, but we are grateful to God that we were able to pick the three points.”

The Bayelsa United coach revealed that his side’s opening goal came from a well-rehearsed routine on the training ground, a moment that highlighted the team’s preparation for the encounter.

Although Warri Wolves fought back to level the score, Bayelsa United showed resilience to grab the decisive goal and secure maximum points.

Okara also appreciated the support of the club’s fans, assuring them that the team will continue to battle to avoid relegation after a slow start to the campaign.

“We want to thank our fans for their support and let them know that we will not let them down. We didn’t start the season well, but we will do everything possible to ensure the team doesn’t go down,” he said.

Attention now shifts to their next challenge away to Plateau United, where Okara expects another stern test, especially with the influence of experienced tactician Gbenga Ogunbote.

“We are going to Jos next and they have a good tactician now in Ogunbote. Their results have improved since he came, so we expect another tough game and we hope to give them a good fight.”

The victory lifted Bayelsa United to 13th  place on the NPFL table with 37 points, while Warri Wolves remain 10th with 39 points.
