Bayelsa United head coach, Meremu Okara, has called on supporters to turn out in large numbers at the Samson Siasia Stadium as his side prepares for a crucial NPFL Matchday 34 clash against Wikki Tourists this weekend.

Okara’s appeal comes in the wake of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Abia Warriors in Aba, where Chukwuemeka Obioma scored the decisive goal in the 65th minute.

The loss leaves Bayelsa United in 16th  position with 40 points just three points above the relegation zone heightening the importance of their upcoming home fixture.

Reflecting on the defeat, Okara lamented his team’s inefficiency in front of goal and a momentary lapse in defence.

“The game of football is about goal scoring. We created chances but didn’t take them, while they scored from a careless moment by our defender,” he said.

“Everything we practised in training, my boys executed, but they failed in the final execution.”

The coach also explained his tactical adjustments during the game following an injury setback.

“Chinedu got injured, so we replaced him with a midfielder and later brought on a striker, but we still maintained our 4-4-3 shape. There was no way we should have left without at least a draw.”

With the team now under pressure to avoid slipping into the relegation zone, Okara is banking on strong home support to inspire a turnaround.

“We appeal to our fans to come out and support us. We hope to reward them with maximum points.”
