The forthcoming visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, to Warri Kingdom on Thursday has been described as a significant moment for the Itsekiri nation, with community leaders expressing optimism about renewed federal attention to the area.
The Itsekiri Leaders of Thought (ILOT) said the visit represents an important opportunity to advance development initiatives across Itsekiri communities.
In a statement issued in Warri, the group commended the First Lady’s record as a former senator and her current role as First Lady of the country.
The statement, signed by ILOT Chairman Chief Edward Ekpoko and Secretary Sir Amorighoye Sunny Mene, noted that Senator Tinubu’s maternal ties to the Warri Kingdom strengthened expectations that her visit could positively impact ongoing and proposed development efforts in the region.
ILOT also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for appointing Itsekiri indigenes to strategic national positions, including Engr. Omatsola Ogbe as Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
The group described the appointments as indicative of growing inclusion at the federal level.
Welcoming the First Lady, the leaders appealed for her support in facilitating the commencement of key infrastructure projects, particularly the Koko–Ogheye–Lagos Highway and the Omadino–Ugborodo Road, which they said are critical to enhancing connectivity and economic growth in the area.
The group further called on Itsekiris at home and in the diaspora to turn out in large numbers to receive the First Lady, expressing confidence that the visit would highlight the rich cultural heritage of the Itsekiri people and mark a new phase of engagement between the people and the Federal Government.
