Two young siblings have been burnt to death in a tragic fire incident at their family residence on Olaribigbe Street, Zion Area, Ode-Aye, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The victims, Queen Ohwo (6) and Everlyne Ohwo (4), were daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ohwo.

It was gathered that the fire may have resulted from negligence during cooking activities at the residence.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, said the tragedy occurred on March 18, 2026.

He noted that police operatives promptly visited the scene, where photographs were taken and necessary documentation carried out.

According to him, the severely burnt remains of the victims were evacuated to a health centre in Ode-Aye, while their parents, who were present at the scene, were found in deep shock and trauma.

He explained that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adebowale Lawal, has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak.

Abayomi added that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ode-Aye has been directed to cordon off the scene, obtain statements from relevant witnesses, and collaborate with the Federal Fire Service to determine the origin and extent of the fire.

"The Command commiserates with the bereaved family over this painful loss and urges members of the public to exercise utmost caution in handling fire and cooking appliances to prevent similar tragedies," he said.

The police, however, advised residents to observe basic fire safety measures, including: never leaving cooking unattended, especially around children, and keeping flammable materials away from cooking areas.

The police further urged parents to avoid leaving children alone where fire or heat sources are in use, keeping basic fire safety tools such as extinguishers, sand, or water nearby, and educating household members on fire hazards and emergency response.
