Nzuko Owere General Assembly has condemned the gruesome killing of a commercial motorcyclist and the abduction of a female student on Amaeze–Ihiagwa Road in Imo State, describing the incident as “barbaric” and intolerable.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its National President, Dan Ikpeazu, the group decried what it called the “continued onslaught of killings and kidnappings” across Owerri Federal Constituency, allegedly carried out by suspected armed herdsmen and bandits.
“The latest disturbing episode occurred along Amaeze-Ihiagwa Road, where a commercial motorcyclist from Ihiagwa community was brutally killed by armed assailants, while his female passenger, a student, was abducted to an unknown destination,” the statement said.
Describing the attack as “one killing too many,” the group warned that the lives of residents could no longer be treated as expendable.
“This barbaric act is one killing too many. The lives of our people can no longer be treated as expendable. Amaeze-Ihiagwa Road and other rural routes across Owerri Federal Constituency have become death traps and theatres of terror,” the group said.
Nzuko Owere lamented that farmers, students, traders and transporters now face daily ambushes on rural roads, urging security agencies to act to stem the rising wave of violence.
“We call on our security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped victim and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice,” the group added.
It extended condolences to the family of the slain motorcyclist and the people of Ihiagwa community, describing the killing as “cold-blooded murder.”
The body advised residents to exercise caution by avoiding isolated and poorly maintained roads, especially at dusk, while urging vigilance groups to strengthen surveillance and collaborate with law enforcement authorities.
“We take this opportunity to advise our people to avoid lonely, dilapidated and ungoverned roads. Our community vigilance groups should increase surveillance and work closely with law enforcement agencies,” the statement said.
Aligning with calls by prominent Nigerians for increased vigilance, the group stressed the need for self-preservation among citizens. “Enough is enough,” it declared.
