...victims taken to hospital for treatment

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have rescued five students of Gateway Polytechnic who were abducted by suspected armed criminals during a late-night attack.

The students were kidnapped on April 27, 2026, at about 10:55 p.m., prompting a distress call to the Ipara Police Division.

A patrol team dispatched to the scene discovered an ash-coloured Toyota vehicle riddled with bullet holes and stained with blood, while personal belongings, including mobile phones, were also recovered.

Spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that investigations led to the recovery of a student identity card, confirming the victims’ affiliation with the institution.

He said the discovery prompted an immediate escalation of the case and the launch of a full-scale rescue operation.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, ordered the deployment of tactical units and directed an intelligence-driven mission to secure the victims’ release.

Babaseyi said operatives from the Isara Area Command, Ipara Division, SWAT, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit, Quick Response Squad and OP MESA carried out intensive bush combing and tracking operations across suspected escape routes.

He added that sustained pressure yielded results on April 28, with the successful rescue of the five students.

The victims were immediately evacuated, debriefed and taken for medical attention after enduring harsh conditions in captivity.

During the operation, the kidnappers reportedly engaged the police in a gun battle but were overpowered, forcing them to flee with suspected gunshot injuries. No casualties were recorded among security personnel.

Babaseyi quoted Ojajuni as commending the officers for their bravery and professionalism, attributing the success of the operation to effective intelligence and swift response.

The police commissioner assured that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through designated emergency channels as security operations continue across the state.
