Over 1,000 houses have been destroyed and severely damaged following a windstorm that occured on Monday and Tuesday across six local government areas of Niger state.
Several people across 25 communities in Mokwa, Bida, Lavun, Katcha, Gbako and Mariga Local Government Areas have been displaced from their homes.
In Mokwa, communities affected include, Sawmill, Kpege Wayata, Kpege, Station Girigi, Efu Shaba Lile, Tifin Madza, Yafu, Etisheshi, Hakimi Aliyu and Nasfat areas while in Bida, communities affected include Cheniyan, Nasarafu, Bariki, Kyari, Dokoza, Masaga A and Masaga B.
The student lodges of the Federal and state Polytechnics and the College of Agriculture were also affected, it brought down electrical poles and billboards.
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago while sympathizing with the victims of the windstorms described the incident as sad and unfortunate noting that the two incidents have caused setbacks to the victims and that he shares in their pains and losses assuring that his administration would do its best eassures to ensure the wellbeing of the people.
The Governor then directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant stakeholders to quickly take necessary actions that would provide succour to the victims.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) who also confirmed the incidents said that the agency in collaboration with other stakeholders and local Government authorities are still conducting detailed assessments to determine the full extent of damages and humanitarian needs of affected victims
