The Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has intensified efforts to end open defecation by flagging off a public toilet facility at Ojoo Market.

Speaking during the ceremony in Ibadan at the weekend, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said the project forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to improve sanitation, promote public health, and eliminate open defecation.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the sanitation agenda of the United Nations Children’s Fund and the Oyo State government.

According to Aderinto, the state aims to end open defecation by 2031. He said that residents and visitors must support the government’s sanitation drive to meet the target within the projected timeline.

He explained that providing public toilet facilities in high-traffic areas such as markets is a strategic step toward discouraging open defecation and safeguarding environmental and public health.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening sanitation infrastructure and implementing policies that will promote cleaner public spaces and a healthier environment for residents.

He also commended Open Public Spaces' management for supporting the state’s environmental agenda.

Aderinto urged traders, residents, and visitors at Ojoo Market to use the facility properly and cooperate with the government’s campaign to end open defecation and maintain improved sanitation practices across the state.

The project, being executed by the Management of Open Public Spaces under the leadership of Abdulateef Abdulganiyu, is expected to provide traders and visitors with a hygienic alternative to indiscriminate sanitation practices.
