Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday criticised the Peoples Democratic Party, describing the party’s pursuit of the presidency as unrealistic amid what he called a deep internal crisis.
Speaking with reporters during a routine inspection of projects in the FCT, Wike defended his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, saying his position reflected “political realism” rather than an attempt to please critics.
The minister responded to criticisms from some PDP chieftains, including former Anambra PDP Chairman, Dan Ulasi, accusing his critics of inconsistency and suggesting some were preparing grounds for possible defections to other political parties, including the Labour Party.
Wike said those criticising him had failed to secure electoral victories for the PDP in their respective states, citing the party’s performance in Anambra State as an example.
According to him, some unnamed presidential aspirants had privately admitted that winning the last election would have been difficult because of the party’s internal divisions.

He maintained that the PDP could not continue to contest elections without first addressing the organisational and structural challenges needed to compete effectively with the ruling party.
Wike said the party’s return to relevance would require a comprehensive rebuilding process at the ward, local government and state levels, rather than focusing primarily on presidential ambitions.
He also linked the PDP’s internal crisis to the loss of several governorship positions across the country.
He stated that the goal is to "solidify the party" for the 2027 cycle, emphasizing that "every election is local" and success in one state like Rivers cannot be taken for granted elsewhere.
Amidst the political friction, Wike emphasised that his administration remains focused on delivering quality through local empowerment.
He touted the success of using indigenous contractors for high-level projects in the FCT.
Wike said, "Local firms handled the construction of the Abuja Customary Division, Judges’ Quarters, Magistrate Courts, and Residences for Heads of Court.
"Infrastructure such as bus terminals and sports centers are being delivered by local contractors.”
Wike stated that the administration has satisfied its search for quality by providing local content, proving that domestic firms can meet high standards.
