A meeting of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains to select a consensus candidate for the Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 elections ended without agreement.
The meeting, held on Monday in Ibadan, brought together about 16 party leaders from Egbeda and Ona Ara local government areas, alongside five aspirants contesting on the party’s platform.
The session was presided over by former Minister of Special Duties, Wole Oyelese, who previously served as chairman of Egbeda Local Government Area.

Four of the aspirants are from Ona Ara, while one is from Egbeda. The meeting convened to harmonise interests and produce a single candidate for the constituency, but it ended in a stalemate because leaders and aspirants failed to agree.

The exercise followed a directive by Seyi Makinde, who instructed stakeholders to resolve the matter internally or escalate it for his intervention.
Sources at the meeting said the inability to reach consensus prompted an indefinite adjournment; the issue is now expected to be revisited, possibly under the governor’s mediation.
"The meeting we had yesterday with the aspirants for Egbeda/ Ona-Ara federal constituency ended in a stalemate because we could not agree.

"Five aspirants came. Four from the Ona Ara local government area, while one person came from the Egbeda local government area. It was going smoothly, but when it became clear that we could not agree, the chairman, a former Minister, adjourned the meeting indefinitely."
Another source at the meeting added that the leaders have agreed to take the matter to the governor, as he has directed that they should bring it to him if they fail to agree on a particular candidate.
"The chairman said that the situation should not continue like that, and he has agreed that the matter be taken to the Governor. The governor had directed that we should meet, and if we could not agree, he said that we should bring it to him, where the issue would be resolved on 15th April. As I said, it ended inconclusively. As I speak, we are yet to pick anyone as the candidate of PDP in Egbeda/Ona Ara federal constituency ahead of 2027.”
