The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening police families through welfare and empowerment programmes in support of reforms by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) leadership.

POWA President, Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday.

She described the visit as symbolic and strategic, stressing that POWA’s role goes beyond protocol to supporting the human foundation of the police.

“We come not merely in protocol, but in partnership,” she said, noting that the strength of the police was closely linked to the well-being of officers’ families.

Mrs Disu commended the IGP’s reform-driven leadership and said the association was in alignment with efforts to promote accountability, morale, and institutional stability. She added that POWA was focused on initiatives that encourage family stability, dignity, and discipline within the barracks and beyond.

She disclosed that POWA’s free eye care programme has provided vision support to over 1,000 police family members, with plans to expand the intervention nationwide. Other priority areas, she said, included mental health support, economic empowerment, education, youth development, and improved welfare systems.

Responding, the IGP described officers’ wives as a critical pillar of policing, acknowledging their sacrifices in sustaining family stability despite the risks associated with the job.

“What you do is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. You hold things together while we are away, and your sacrifices are not taken for granted,” he said.

He added that the support of police families makes the demands of the profession more bearable and strengthens operational effectiveness.
