The Association of Former Ondo State House of Assembly Members, a body comprising former lawmakers on the state, has hailed President Bola Tinubu on his directive to leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and governors in ensuring hitch-free primary elections to select the party's candidates ahead of the 2027 general election.
The association also commended Tinubu for his prompt assent to the Electoral Act 2026.
In a release jointly signed by Hon Olugbenga Araoyinbo, Hon Olusegun Akiode and Hon Tayo Abidakun, Chairman, Secretary and Public Relations Officer respectively, the association said the section 84(2) of the Electoral Act, which stipulates direct primaries or consensus as the procedure for nomination of party candidates, will prevent unnecessary waste of money by aspirants.
The former lawmakers particularly commended the president on his directive to the state governors on the platform of the APC to ensure a rancour-free process in the selection of the party's candidates ahead of the election.
"The president's directive to the governors will help in ensuring that the APC stays together as one strong family ahead of the 2027 general election," the association said.
It will be recalled that President Tinubu, in a recent meeting with APC governors, held at the presidential Villa, Abuja, asked them to ensure a peaceful and transparent party primaries.
Ahead of the primaries, the association therefore advised the governor to adhere strictly to the president's advice, maintaining that the APC must ensure that all members of the party are provided a level playing field during the primary election.
"We are going into a very crucial election in 2027. Our great party, the APC, needs to make sure that we do all it takes to remain as a United family. The president has told the leaders and the governors what to do. Our prayers, therefore, are that they need President Tinubu's directives."
