  • State consistently recording low enlistment’

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, and Police Service Commission have urged youths in Lagos State to enlist in the police, citing benefits of a policing career.

Akiolu spoke when the commission, led by a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police and Chair of Committee on Police Matters, Taiwo Lakanu, visit Iga Idunganran palace.

Lakanu said he was in Lagos to monitor the police recruitment, decrying the low turnout of applicants in the state.

He said only 1,000 youths in Lagos had enrolled, compared to between 4,000 and 5,000 applicants in other states.

Lakanu attributed the development to a lack of interest among Lagos youths and urged the oba to assist in mobilising more applicants.

“Lagos youths do not like to join the police. Since the exercise started, just 1,000 have enrolled, while other states are recording 4,000 and 5,000.

“When we noticed this, we extended the exercise, but the situation remained the same. Our youths need enlightenment. They do not know they can improve their lot by joining the police,” he said.

He said many looking for jobs were not responding despite sensitisation efforts.

“We are not happy with the response here. Many are looking for jobs but are not taking advantage of this opportunity.

“We have been going round to tell them on benefits of becoming officers, but they seem not to understand,” he said.

Akiolu blamed the preference for white-collar jobs and a decline in patriotism.

He said policing is noble and urged youths to join the force.

“Police work is one of the best jobs depending on how it is approached. The problem is a lack of patriotism. Many prefer white-collar jobs, but policing is honourable’’.

‘‘We will continue to appeal to them,” he said.

The monarch also called on the government to improve the welfare and remuneration of police personnel to make the profession more attractive.

He urged officers to be professional and civil in their interactions with the public.

“The behaviour of policemen reflects the society. Officers should avoid corruption, be hardworking, truthful and civil.

“The government must also support them and improve their welfare. It is not encouraging for someone to serve for 35 years and retire with about N2 million as benefits,” Akiolu added.
