As ward-to-ward National Identification Number (NIN) registration kicks off across the 25 local government areas of Delta State, residents have called on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to monitor its officials amid fears of possible extortion.
Welcoming the initiative, some residents cited past experience of alleged misconduct and urged authorities to ensure the exercise remains free and transparent.
According to a report by the Ministry of Information, residents of Sapele have called on NIMC and other relevant authorities to monitor officials involved in the exercise.

They urged the commission to address any form of corruption, citing past experience where individuals were allegedly asked to pay before being registered.
Speaking to reporters, a resident, Osahon Edema, described the ward-to-ward initiative as a welcome development, but noted that it must remain free as officially promised.
He appealed to NIMC to provide dedicated phone numbers or reporting channels to enable residents report misconduct.

In a statement, Director-General Fred Oghenesivbe encouraged residents aged zero and above, who were yet to register, to take advantage of the exercise.
He said NIN had become mandatory for accessing banking and telecommunications services, participating in government empowerment programmes, processing travel documents and conducting official and financial transactions.
He assured residents that registration centres would be located at designated town halls in every ward across the state, to ensure accessibility and convenience.
The registration runs from February 16 to March 30, and will take place daily from 8am to 5pm.
