Rotary International District 9111 plans to build and equip a N723 million wellness centre in the 2026/27 year.

Its District Governor-Elect, Mrs. Bukola Bakare, announced this during the District Team Learning Seminar (DTLS) for the incoming leaders of the body in the next Rotary year in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

She also planned to embark on a medical intervention of over N100 million, involving 100 cataract surgeries and the donation of 5,000 eyeglasses.

In the education sector, she planned to train teachers and head teachers in private and public schools; execute a N50 million empowerment programme for women and youths; a N50 million Peace project to empower non-Rotarians; a N30 million grant for public image, and N50 million for scholarships under the District Educational and Welfare Endowment Fund (DEWEF) programme.

To fund these programmes, Bakare said she would embark on a fundraiser and attract funds from their global body.

She sought members' cooperation to achieve her plans and impact-driven ideas, reminding them of their motto for the coming year: 'Create lasting impact' as she unveiled the 'Value, impact and legacy' vision. She stressed accelerated growth and strong visibility, as well as making the district a leading one in Rotary worldwide during her tenure

Beyond these, Bakare said she pledged to boost membership of the 81-club district by 25 per cent, noting this is achievable if members and their leaders are committed to the cause.

The District Governor, Prince Henry Akinyele, said leadership in Rotary is akin to a relay where the baton is handed to the next participant, not a competition. He reminded the trainees that they would take over in July and thus be ready to assume duties. "You were not chosen by chance but by your character. The success of the 2026/27 Rotary year depends on your collaboration. Be proactive and supportive," he added.

He noted that leadership is not accidental. It is prepared for the reason Rotary embarked on the training, noting that teamwork is the key to success.

In a message via Zoom, the Rotary International President-Elect, Yinka Babalola, congratulated the trainees and charged them on transformational leadership. He said Rotary emphasises people-focused leadership, moving away from a focus on members. He urged them to embark on projects and programmes that would create impacts on the people.

Babalola said, "Another quality we share is that Rotary has shaped who we are and made us better. That is where change truly begins. Not only for the people we have served, but also for ourselves. Think about our vision statement. Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. When discussing lasting global change, we must address both ending bullying and building peace. When we talk about changing our communities, there are plenty of incredible examples. But then I ask, how do we make lasting change in ourselves? and with lasting solutions.''

A facilitator, Dr. Wuroala Adekunbi, also emphasised teamwork, constant training, and application of what they would be taught or learn.

Leaders of the district attended the event, including the District Governor-Nominee, Samuel Ayetutu; Chairman of the seminar planning committee, Past Assistant Governor (PAG) Samson Okenyi; and Past District Governor (PDG) Bola Oyebade, who anchored the training.
